A prayer for our times

We are always surrounded by the angels and saints who are glorifying God and protecting and assisting mankind. They are our particular friends and allies in situations where we are touching limits that we cannot overcome.

DEAR Guardian Angel go for me to the church, there kneel down at Mass for me.

At the Offertory, take me to God, and offer Him my service: What I am, what I have, offer as my gift.

At the Consecration, with your seraphic strength, adore my Saviour truly present, praying for those who have loved me, for those who have offended me, and for those now deceased, that the blood of Jesus may purify them all.

During Holy Communion, bring to me the Body and Blood of Jesus uniting Him with me in spirit, so that my heart may become His dwelling place. Plead with Him, that through His sacrifice all people throughout the world may be saved.

When the Mass ends, bring home to me and to every home, the Lord's blessing.

The bishops have recommended that we should all make a Perfect Act of Contrition at this time.
Perfect contrition (or a Contrition of Charity) is true and real sorrow for our sins which is created when we realise the immense love of God for each one of us.  We express this contrition when we realise how we offend God by our sinful words, deeds and omissions in contrast to the immeasurable love and mercy that he continually shows us.

 This requires us to be contrite of heart for what we have done, know and be overwhelmed by the love and mercy of God for his children, and to approach this grace with humility and resolution not to sin again. We should resolve to go to Sacramental Confession as soon as we are able to.

An Act of Contrition

MY GOD, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Saviour Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.

Spiritual Communion

There are times when people are unable to receive the Holy Communion, through illness or due to their personal disposition. Even though some may not receive sacramental Communion, all are united in some way by the Holy Spirit. The tradition of spiritual Communion is an important one to remember and reaffirm. A deep spiritual Communion is possible even when we are not able to receive the Sacrament.

MY JESUS, I believe that Thou art present in the Blessed Sacrament.
I love Thee above all things,
and desire to receive Thee into my soul.
Since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace Thee as if Thou art already there
and unite myself entirely to Thee;
never permit me to be separated from Thee. Amen.

General Prayer for Health

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me,

Christ before me, Christ beside me,

Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me,

Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Prayer for those in Authority

Loving God, in Christ Jesus, the servant of all, you call us to the service of others.

Grant to those who govern the community the skill to recognise its urgent needs and the strength to pursue the common good. Endow us all with patience and courage, that we may care for the suffering, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and sustain the needy.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer before a Crucifix

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus

while before Your face I humbly kneel and,

with burning soul,

pray and beseech You

to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments

of faith, hope, and charity;

true contrition for my sins,

and a firm purpose of amendment.

While I contemplate,

with great love and tender pity,

Your five most precious wounds,

pondering over them within me

and calling to mind the words which David,

Your prophet, said to You, my Jesus:

“They have pierced My hands and My feet,

they have numbered all My bones.”

Prayer for Doctors, Nurses, Carers and all who work with and for the sick and dying

Wondrous God, author of life, you fashioned us in your likeness and breathed into us the life which is your own.

Be with those whose special care is the health of mind and body. Fill their hearts with awe for the life which is your gift and sustain them daily in your service, that their hands may bring to others the comfort of your healing touch. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for those affected by illness

Merciful God, come to the help of your people. Be our shelter in this time of peril and strengthen the bonds of our community. Bring healing to all who suffer the ravages of disease and assist those whose skill and art can put an end to this affliction. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, our refuge and our shield ,even when we walk in the shadow of death you are there at our side.

Be with your people in this time of danger: bring strength to the afflicted and protection to those untouched by disease.

Give us love and courage, that we may trust in your power to save

and reach out to all who need our care. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Phrases from Scripture

O Lord, come to my rescue, Lord, come to my aid.

Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved, for you are my praise.

Lord, save me!

Amen, Come, Lord Jesus!

A Prayer of St Ignatius

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory,

my understanding, and my entire will,

All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.

To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace,

that is enough for me.

Prayer for the Household

Hear us, Lord, and send your angel from heaven to visit and protect,
to comfort and defend all who live in this house. Amen.

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother;
to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

  Please remember to pray that men will hear the Lord's call to a vocation to serve Him in the priesthood,  and to pray for those who have answered His call.

A Prayer for Priests

Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
for your unfaithful and tepid priests;
for your priests labouring at home or abroad in distant mission fields;
for your tempted priests;
for your lonely and desolate priests;
for your young priests;
for your dying priests;
for the souls of your priests in Purgatory.

But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me:the priest who baptized me;
the priests who’ve absolved me from my sins;
the priests at whose Masses I’ve assisted
and who’ve given me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
the priests who’ve taught and instructed me;
all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, especially…...

Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.
